Musculoskeletal Conditions

Welcome to DeMaio Family Chiropractic

Musculoskeletal is a general term which is defined as relating to muscles and the skeleton. Thus, the musculoskeletal system involves a variety of components, which include the following:

· muscles

· bones

· joints (the place of union between two or more bones)

· bursa (fluid sac between the muscles and bones that forms in areas of friction)

· ligaments (a fibrous band of tissue connecting bones)

· tendons (a fibrous band of tissue connecting muscle with bone)

Musculoskeletal conditions constitute over 150 diseases and syndromes, all of which are typically progressive and associated with pain. If these ailments had to be placed in broad categories, they could be classified as the following:

  • *  joint diseases
  • *  physical disability
  • *  spinal disorders
  • *  conditions resulting from trauma
The musculoskeletal conditions that impact society the most are rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, lower back pain and limb trauma. A demographic breakdown reveals just how much these conditions impact the population:
  • *  the lower back comprises the most common site of regional pain in younger and middle-aged cohorts
  • *  knee pain is the most common site of pain for older adults
  • *  Back pain and generalized widespread pain are common causes of sick leave as well as long-term work disability for the       working age population, a fact that has great economic consequences for society and companies alike

The following are a few of the more common conditions we will explore:

Muscle Spasms

Bursitis and Tendonitis

Arthritis and Osteoarthritis

Osteoporosis

Spinal Stenosis

Degenerative Disc Disease

Spinal Compression Fractures
