Neurological conditions such as headaches, neuritis (inflammation of any part of a nerve, other than the nerve root), and radiculitis (inflammation of a nerve root as it exits the spine) are the most commonly treated neurological cases in the chiropractic profession. Other conditions such as sciatica, fibromyalgia, and a variety of neuropathies are additional conditions that a chiropractor may see. Because neurological problems can be extremely serious and even life-threatening, these situations often call for a referral or co-management with other health-care professionals as deemed necessary.
Neuritis
Neuritis is defined as an inflammation of one or several nerves. The cause may be mechanical, vascular, allergic, toxic, metabolic, or viral. Symptoms include tingling, burning, or stabbing pains with sensory nerves and anything from muscle weakness to paralysis with motor nerves . These symptoms are usually confined to the part of the body served by the inflamed nerve. Analgesics can relieve the pain. Once the underlying cause is treated, recovery is usually rapid but may be incomplete in severe cases, with residual motor and sensory disturbances.
Neuropathies
Neuropathy is a condition involving nerve damage. Neuropathy can affect movement, sensation (e.g., temperature, pain, touch), and functions, such as breathing and digestion. The symptoms of neuropathy vary depending on its underlying cause, the type of nerve(s) affected, their distribution and the severity of the disorder.

Sciatica
Sciatica is a set of symptoms including pain that may be caused by general compression and/or irritation of one or more spinal nerve roots that give rise to the sciatic nerve, or by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself. The pain may be felt in the low back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) or
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)
This is a chronic pain disorder that usually begins after a trauma such as an injury to the tissue, bone or nerves of your limb (arm or leg). However, the actual cause is not known. CRPS is more common in women than men and the average age affected is in the mid 30’s.

Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS)
Fibromyalgia is a clinical syndrome defined by chronic widespread muscular pain, fatigue and tenderness. Many people with fibromyalgia also experience additional symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bladder, cognitive and memory problems (often called “fibro fog”), temporomandibular joint disorder, pelvic pain, restless leg syndrome, sensitivity to noise and temperature, and anxiety and depression. These symptoms can vary in intensity and, like the pain of fibromyalgia, wax and wane over time.
